From Chaos to Calm: Polly’s Journey to a Functional Home

Polly’s home was bursting at the seams, quite literally. With four kids (ages 10 to 18), four-plus dogs (she’s a dog breeder!), and a love for bulk shopping, her house had reached a tipping point. Every surface was piled high, every drawer overflowing, and the visual clutter was affecting not just her space but her peace of mind. Polly felt paralyzed by the sheer volume of stuff and didn’t even know where to begin.

Enter Polly’s mom. Recognizing her daughter’s struggle, she gifted her a professional organizing service for Christmas. Now, let me just say, gifting organizing services can be tricky—it’s key to ensure the recipient is ready and willing to accept the help. Thankfully, Polly was thrilled. Her mom hoped this gift would not only lighten Polly’s load but also create a more functional environment for her grandchildren.

The introduction came with a laugh. Polly’s mom had described me as “independent, bossy, and opinionated,” to which she added, “You’ll get along great with my daughter!” She was right. We clicked immediately, diving headfirst into the overwhelming task of reclaiming Polly’s home.

the Challenge - Drowning in Clutter, Searching for Calm

Walking through Polly’s house during the consultation, it was clear that “stuff” had taken over every hallway, countertop, and corner. The biggest challenge was figuring out where to start. For me, the answer was obvious: the kitchen.

The kitchen was the heart of the home—a hub for family meals, homework sessions, and gathering around. But it was also a black hole of bulk food purchases and gadgets no one used. Starting here would create the biggest impact.

The Process

We began by emptying every single drawer. Every. Single. One. What followed was a meticulous process of sorting, purging, and assigning each item a home.

Day by day, we tackled the trouble spots:

  • Kitchen: Cleared out drawers, cabinets, and counters, then reworked the pantry to focus on functionality.

  • Office Area: Transformed a drop zone of papers and random items into an organized workspace.

  • Mudroom and Coat Closet: Streamlined the chaos of bags, shoes, and jackets, creating a system for daily comings and goings.

  • Bedrooms and Primary Bathroom: Decluttered personal spaces, making them restful and manageable.

  • Dog Breeding Space: Organized the office into a functional area for welcoming future litters and potential adopters.

With Polly working alongside me, we tackled it all, one pile at a time. The kids even joined in, benefiting from the process and, at times, marveling at what we unearthed (long-lost treasures included!).

The rESULTS

The transformation wasn’t just physical—it was mental. Polly said it best in her testimonial:

"You changed my entire way of thinking about ‘stuff’ in my house and in my life. I had been so paralyzed by all the clutter and overwhelmed by all the visual stress that my entire environment was not peaceful. You taught me how to create visual peace in my home. I am so thankful!"

Polly’s home became a place of functionality and calm:

  • For her family: The kitchen table was cleared for meals and homework, creating space for connection.

  • For her daily life: Systems made finding keys (and getting out the door on time) effortless.

  • For her dogs: A well-organized space to care for new litters and welcome visitors.

  • For her future: She could now imagine a day when moving wouldn’t feel like climbing a mountain of belongings.

We hauled out a lot of trash (extra pickups were necessary!) and donated items by the carload. Polly’s habits shifted, and as she put it, she no longer felt the need to keep things “just in case.”
